Information for drivers

Participants volunteering will be asked to do the following on February 8th, 2008:

drive a rental car (provided to you) on a ten mile segment of I-880, near Union City, CA.
drive up to 8 hours on this segment (or a portion of this segment). You will receive one hour breaks after at most three hours of driving.
wear a hands-free Bluetooth headset while you are driving to allow us to communicate with you.

As part of the experiment, each vehicle will have a cellular phone on-board.

The phone will be used to calculate and record the vehicle's position and speed at all times while it is in your possession. In addition to our privacy-preserving traffic estimation software, we have installed a second application which will enable us to track your vehicle in real time, for logistical and safety purposes during the experiment.
Additionally, some or all of the position and speed data and your vehicle and cell phone ID number will be sent over the cell phone network to a secure server at UC Berkeley.
This server will be accessed in real-time by the researchers, and will be used test our traffic estimation software, as well as to monitor your vehicle on the day of the experiment.
